Orchestral
dance classics by Bach, Copland and
Grainger plus spiritual songs from
around the world
Nigel Swinford writes: “The
music of Bach takes up half of this
CD. It has been said that his music
is not just Baroque, it is everything:
classical, romantic and modern. It
is academic and it is also sensual.
But for me, it is the quality of dance
which is the most wondrous. Schumann
coined the phrase ‘heavenly
length’ when describing Bach's
work. It is simply that you want the
dance, be it a gigue, a bourrée
or a badinerie, or even the bouncing
chorale accompaniment with which this
CD closes, to go on forever. Somehow,
‘old Bach’ as he was famously
once called, seemed to be in touch
with the Lord of the Dance –
that rhythm, that joy, that fellowship
which never ends.
